This book highlights the plight of refugees who came to Malaysia to seek shelter and refuge only to be arrested, abused, tortured and even trafficked to Thailand to be sold as sex slaves or slaves on fishing boats. Let's be honest. How many of us have looked at refugees in a negative light, thinking that they are the root of all social problems? Why haven't we thought that they did not come here to compete for jobs with us? They came here simply because the situation back home was very bad only to find out that the situation here is almost the same. They are exploited, given harsh treatment, labeled as "illegal immigrants" even when they have documents to show that they are refugees. They have already suffered back home, they don't deserve to suffer here. No human being deserves the kind of treatment they get!
The stories and testimonies told by the Burmese refugees are simply heart wrenching. I was in tears when I read about their sufferings. And let me tell you, I am not one who cries when reading a book, no matter how "touching" it is. It opened my eyes to look at refugees in a different light. They did not choose to come here. They had no choice. They came here to seek refuge, but we selfish human beings discriminate them and blame them for things that were not caused by them in the first place. "The Revolving Door" reveals this truth of modern day slavery through the testimonies and eyes of the refugees themselves. It exposes the abuse, the endemic corruption and the trafficking of women, children and refugees in Malaysia and at the Malaysia-Thai border. When faced with injustices and abuses, we can choose to either be enraged or energized.
